Fokustraining mit Eric Dunlap

From time to time, advanced students from our dojo lead a focus training session on a topic of their choosing. This Sunday, Eric Dunlap, 4th Dan Aikikai, will be teaching.
Taking Chaos

Randori — “taking chaos”

In this session, we examine its underlying principles: not as a scramble for survival, but as a laboratory for movement, awareness, and technique under pressure. How does Tori manage multiple attackers without becoming reactive? How do we anticipate an attack, or better still, shape the space so that attacks become predictable — even invited? We explore how continuous movement — never arriving, always passing through — opens technique rather than closing it down, carrying us beyond the fixed geometry of kata into a freedom found not by escaping chaos, but by learning to inhabit it.

About Eric

Eric began his aikido practice in 1998 at the New York Aikikai under Senseis Yoshimitsu Yamada, Seiichi Sugano, Donovan Waite, Harvey Konigsberg, and Hal Lehrman, who remains his principal mentor. In 2011, he moved to Berlin and began training at Aikido Dojo Gleisdreieck. As a former professional dancer, he brings a deep love of movement to his aikido — an influence that shapes how he thinks about space, timing, and the body in motion.
