Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior experience?
No. Everything you need to know, you’ll learn with us.
Do I need to be particularly fit or flexible?
No. Flexibility develops with training. You progress at your own pace.
What should I wear?
Comfortable workout clothes (t-shirt and sweatpants). We train barefoot. Please remove jewelry before training.
Am I too old to start?
No. Many of our members begin between ages 30 and 50, looking for a sustainable martial art. Aikido and Kenjutsu can be practiced well into older age.
Do I have to decide immediately after the trial session?
No. Take your time to think it over. Some people know right away, others need two or three trial sessions. Both are completely fine.
Can I just watch a class instead?
Yes, you’re welcome to observe. However, we recommend trying a trial session—it’s the only way to get a real sense of the training.
I don’t speak German. Will I be able to follow the classes?
Classes are conducted in German, but we provide English explanations when needed. The physical nature of Aikido means much of the instruction happens through demonstration, and international members typically find they can follow along from their first session. Many technical terms are in Japanese anyway, which everyone learns together.
How do I get to the dojo?
The dojo is located at Tempelhofer Ufer 36 in Kreuzberg, Berlin. It’s easily accessible by public transport:
U-Bahn: U1, U2 (Gleisdreieck station)
S-Bahn: S1, S2, S25 (Gleisdreieck station)
Bus: M29
The dojo is about a 2-minute walk from Gleisdreieck station.
